Practical Straw Bale Building Course – Selkirk, Scotland

31st August – 4 September 2022

Come and join us on this exciting practical straw bale building course in Selkirk, Scotland. We are working with self-builders Jenna and Trevor who have permission to build a load bearing, one and a half storey, straw-bale house with car tyre foundations. The house will be 8m x 13m, plus a round garden room, a porch and verandah. We have previously run a car tyre foundations course on site and Jenna and Trevor are now ready to start building the walls.

The course will cover practical aspects of strawbale building including:

  • How to dress and customise bales
  • Notching
  • Loadbearing and infill techniques
  • Creating reveals around windows and doors
  • Making the walls straight
  • Compression of the wall, and much more!

Course dates: 31 August – 4 September 2022

Location: Selkirk, Scotland

Cost: £200 for 5-day course

Times: We will work from 8:45 – 17:00 each day

Food: Refreshments are included in the price but you will need to bring your own lunch

Accommodation: You will need to find your own accommodation – we can give you guidance once you have booked

The Bigger Picture!

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING WITH YOU (if you have them, we can provide most things except boots and clothing if you let us know):

  • Stout work boots, steel toe-cap if possible
  • Work clothes to keep you warm and dry (and sun protection too! Cap, suncream etc.)
  • Water bottle
  • Work gloves
  • A pair of wrap round safety glasses
  • Paper and pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Sharp knife e.g. Stanley knife

And if you have any of the following and it is easy for you to bring them please do, but not essential:

  • Claw hammer
  • Axe or bill hook
  • Hand saw
  • Petrol hedge clippers
  • Alligator saw
