Clay Plastering: London
11 – 15 September 2017 £325.00
5-day Clay Plastering Course based at Hawkwood Nursery, the home of Organiclea, a workers’ cooperative growing food sustainably on London’s edge in the Lea Valley. On this beautiful 12-acre site is run a market garden, a box scheme, volunteering and training programmes with a diverse range of people taking part in the site’s work each week. This project is to plaster the strawbale walls of their classroom and plasterboard walls in the warehouse. It’s a good example of how to incorporate natural building materials into a conventional building refurbishment. We will be using clay from our site for the plaster mix.
Whilst participating on the course you will understand; why we use clay plaster, how to make the mixture, how to apply it to strawbale walls and you’ll learn just how beautiful it is! Clay plastering is great fun. It’s also a very effective covering for strawbale walls, providing a beautiful, warm, cosy environment. Clay plaster helps to control moisture in a building and enables walls to breathe. Beneficial to the health of those living there and also has great acoustic benefits. Clay plastering can be very artistic, take a look at this video.
